Welcome message from the president
It is a great honour to serve as the new President of the Hong Kong Society of Sleep Medicine. I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to our past presidents and council members for their steadfast dedication and outstanding contributions. Their efforts have built a strong foundation for the Society and advanced the field of sleep medicine in Hong Kong.
As we look to the future, we must acknowledge the high prevalence of various sleep disorders within our society. Conditions such as insomnia, sleep apnoea, circadian rhythm disorders, and sleep problems in children and adolescents are increasingly common, affecting individuals across all ages and demographics. Yet, many of these issues remain undiagnosed or inadequately treated, highlighting the significant unmet need in the community. Additionally, the increasing variety of treatment options for prevalent conditions like insomnia and sleep apnoea-ranging from psychological/behavioural therapies to advanced medical devices and surgical/dental interventions-calls for the development of a multidisciplinary collaborative care model that integrates expertise from various disciplines.
Similarly, we recognise the importance of our role in promoting public sleep health literacy. Raising awareness about the importance of healthy sleep and equipping the community with practical knowledge are fundamental to improving overall well-being.
In this new council, we are committed to fostering partnerships among medical doctors, allied health professionals, and researchers to broaden the scope of sleep research and improve outcomes for those we serve. We have also started working on organising the Certificate Examination of Sleep Medicine in Hong Kong, which was suspended due to COVID-19. Additionally, we will maintain our collaboration with local media, NGOs, and universities to advocate sleep health.
With your continuous support, through fostering collaboration and enhancing clinical care, we can expand the realm of sleep research and achieve better sleep health for our community.
Warm regards,
Dr. Joey Chan
